My Story
Who I am
Age group triathlete/runner.
What I'm overcoming
Loss of father
Date of injury
1992-04-01 00:00:00
My Story
I was hit by pickup truck while cycling. Transported by air to nearest trauma center. Lost lots of teeth, broken ankle and serious road rash but I was wearing a helmet and had insurance. I did not really think much of it until my father's life was taken in an auto accident. My father was truly unstoppable. He ran every St. Louis marathon between 1973 - 1992. 21 straight years before being hit by a car during a triathlon bike training session. Forced to take 1993 off to rehab his surgically repaired leg. He picked back up and ran the next 6 straight marathons. My father was swimming; biking and running up until the day that truck slammed into his car and took his life. I now appreciate how precious life is and how fortunate I am to be able to do the things that I enjoy. Too many athletes are taken from us each year by carelessness.
My Heroes
My father, Richard Lake.
